I'm still not sure what people mean by "proactive" moderation.
I would say that proactive moderation means modding based on what you expect to happen if you don't take action instead of letting bad posting occur and punishing people after the fact and after there has been a community determination that bad posting has, in fact, occurred.
Eh, it's not a deal-breaker for me but if it's abundantly clear that someone is posting a JAQ-off garbage OP that will leads to AIDS but still sticks within the letter of the rules I don't mind a proactive ban. All depends on the mods having some basic common sense.

I think we can split into two separate discussions a) how do we determine who is a mod? b) what should modding look like? Regarding a) microbet suggested a rotation and I am afraid I have to disagree with him once again. Letting anyone mod just because it's their turn is asking for trouble. Not everyone is fit to be a mod. I choose the health of the forum over any egalitarian principle. We can be democratic. We can have an up or down vote on any mod candidate. We can have votes of no confidence to get rid of mods. Many things can be done to ensure mods have the trust and act in the best interest of the community. Regarding b) we could decide about a general modding philosophy before going into detail. What do we want the modding to accomplish and how to go about it? gregorio for example is against pro-active modding. As I understand it he wants a laissez-faire approach where mods only intervene when called into action and after some deliberation. I don't think I agree with that. I think the mods should strive to make the forum a non-toxic place and intervene when things get too heated.

I think we should be able to object to someone being a mod, but the default should be that people are ok.

I think it's high time that we decide on the moderation rules.
As there will be quite a lot to discuss I am going to try to break into bite sized bits.
How do we want to handle:
1) NSFW content (has to be marked?)
(allowed as avatar or inline?/allowed as link?/disallowed?)
1a) swear words 1b) racy/suggestive images 1c) nudity 1d) pornography 1e) gore/disturbing or violent images
2) copyrighted content
2a) copy/paste articles? 2b) allow discussion of pirated content? 2c) allow links to pirated content?
3) interpersonal conduct
3a) insults 3b) 'fighting words' 3c) wishing harm ("I wouldn't mind if you stepped on a lego"/"I hope you stub your toe"/"diagf"/"go kill yourself") 3d) posting personal information of another user

I hope peeps are not too upset with my modding, I know I was inexperienced in modding and expected to make a few mistakes along the way.. I think I deleted 1 post too quickly and Edited 2 that was just rude.
I would like to take the time to thank all in this forum for being so understanding of me, and helping out whenever possible. 😅 It was a pleasure to be a part of this and I would do it again. 👍 Thanks all. ✌️

I think we barely even noticed you were a mod, which is a good sign.
