I doubt we'll be here long enough for it to make sense to have super targeted threads so random stuff can go here I guess. This Atlantic article about Instagram is pretty good: ...even if the intro is pretty corny Very "how are you doing, fellow kids!" But yeah, seems like it's really gone downhill ever since it stopped being a place where your friends post photos and more of them trying to drive brand engagement and shit: That mostly tracks with my experience. My feed is a desert and is only useful for seeing what my local bakery or brewery are up to, or my wife's cousin who does some influencer stuff in Brazil. Friends posting photos from vacation or whatever is near-zero now.

written a lot about this but tiktok is crushing its competitors. tiktok’s growth is absurd this last 2 years. simple reason - it shows users what they actually want to see

simple reason - it shows users what they actually want to see What do users actually want to see? Like since it's all video-based and focused on viral stuff, how much are you seeing from actual IRL friends versus influencers/popular content producers? I'm sure the content is good since literally everyone I've ever seen talk about TikTok says it is, but I wonder if it actually leaves room for content that's personal to you, or if every app that does that (i.e. Facebook originally, Instagram originally) eventually kills that off once they're like "this isn't making us money".

ok wherever we go’s gonna need an edit button, that is annoying. I noticed today also that when you post an IG story, it automatically goes to FB reels. they’ve been trying to gently force users into using FB reels for years now, this is the most aggressive attempt I’ve seen. I’m not even sure why. how does that help them?
theyve done tons of annoying stuff to promote this “feature” but this is by far the worst.

If you want to follow friends, there’s a different feed for that with one very easy and obvious click. people been begging zuck to do that for years, like YEARS. always a nope.

it’s also a lot better as a content creator on there. if you are at all used to how to use hashtags and trends and stuff you can go viral on accident quite easily. on YT/IG/twitter to be seen at all usually involves doing insanely wild things, either on video or to game the feed algorithm

Social media is a cancer lol. Back in my day we used AOL Instant Messenger. I used AIM in middle/high school and it was toxic as hell. Kids would make new screen names to send creepy/mean stuff to others anonymously. So basically the same behavior you see from many adults on UP today.

my mom always monitored all my AIM communications til i moved out, so i effectively couldn't have a normal middle school life.
also, I have composed a symphonic heavy metal christmas playlist, if anyone's interested.

I don’t think humans are ready for unfettered social media. We’re too stupid to not fall for every bullshit huckster that comes along and as a group lack the empathy to show basic kindness for people who are different than us.

Humans aren't ready for unfettered anything. Above a certain size, any group of humans needs some form of gatekeeping because people are stupid.

the southwest is getting absolutely hammered by a winter snow storm. sierra nevadas expected to get a few feet this weekend. potentially great news for the drought. not over by any means, but if we have another storm or two between now and march we’ll be in a lot better shape I think.

Yeah, I saw that. That is great news and apparently is on top of already heavier than average snowfall for the season.

Storm's still going, had some pretty crazy intensity throughout the day I only see every several years, typically during la nina or el nino (only seen 1 el nino and a handful of la ninas). I don't know how much rainfall dumped yesterday but there was flooding and it looked like a lot. Then at 4am I woke up to the sound of really loud thunder and then the house sounded like it was getting hammered by hail. Tons of ice on the ground today in clumps, looks like snow (I know it's hail) , which I've never seen in person in CA, it's rare where I am. Looks like the hailstorm took out a shrubbery at my friend's house:

For anyone with young children, I just learned through personal experience that it is currently extremely difficult to get children’s antibiotics (any brand nearly any popular broad-based type), children’s acetaminophen (any brand), and children’s ibuprofen (any brand).

This really flew under the radar, and shame on the media for not doing a better job of reporting this, but bivalent boosters are available (as of 4 days ago) for children under age 5. MrWookie

I think humanity needs like a generation or two to adapt to social media and adopt basic norms surrounding it. Previous generations tested things like 'how much lead can we use in everyday life?', 'what sort of household objects should be electrified for your convenience?', and 'how many tankards of whiskey should a person drink in one sitting?'. Our generation gets mature computers, social media / the internet in general, CRISPR, and apparently at least AI. We are going to demonstrate all the Don'ts for future generations pretty clearly. This is the reason that Crypto trying to use freedom from oppressive financial regulations as a 'pro' was mega stupid. The vast majority of those regulations are if anything too soft. Every single one was at least an ineffective or inefficient barrier to fraud. None of it is new and trying to reinvent the wheel is usually stupid.

Meanwhile my daughter just developed a rash after several days of amoxicillin for an ear infection, and now I have no idea what antibiotic we’ll even use next time she’s sick because every other antibiotic she’s ever been prescribed has led to lots of throwing up. So that’s something to look forward to.

And every respiratory virus she’s ever had has led to a secondary ear infection, like clockwork, about 5 days after her first symptoms appear.

So that’s something to look forward to. Usually this is related to the virus they had, not a drug allergy rash, especially if they've tolerated penicillin based drugs for a long time. Can also safely do a lot of 3rd gen cephalosporins too.
